I worked on a PhD in Intercultural Genderstudies and Comparative Religions focussed matrilineality and healing rituals in a migrant society between West Africa Ghana and The Hague. Lecturing at the University of Leiden, I did two years in African oral Religions and in Anthropology of Religions.
I have been working without license with children and teenagers, adolescents for 25 years now, at request of municipalities, parents and schools. As well as a football and hockey youth trainer and coach, violinteacher, and language teacher and international specialist in learning and high sensitivity, visual thinking and democratic education.

Rise and Shine International Democratic Secondary is a small scale pilot project in neurodivergent education. It is registered at Eudec, European Democratic Education Community https://eudec.org/. Legally it pertains to the company Ariella Gracia, registered at the Chambers of Commerce in Amsterdam (number KvK 51096617). It started in the Algarve in 2020 and moved to Northern Spain in 2021. Right now we are closed due to evaluating the past years and exploring with care expansion in the logistic and financial field. We will soon publish a report of our findings from the past years regarding visual thinking in democratic education.

Rise and Shine International Democratic Secondary, is education in neuro-divergence and learning. Neuro- divergence is an umbrella term for: high-sensitivity, high-giftedness and visual thinking and other labels. Twenty percent of all students in schools worldwide are physically neuro-divergent right now. It is a physical characteristic. In our school we see it as a talent, to be explored as such and not to be adjusted to a system, or suppressed to be used only for 10%. That would be like asking a top football player to win a match using one leg only. Consequently in our school neurodivergent teaching is standardized. Didactics for neurodivergence is also suitable and digestible for non neurodivergent students.
Democratic
Democratic education is as old as hundred years. In 1921 the first prototype democratic school started in USA, Summerhill. Sudbury Valley (USA) and Hadera (Israel) followed. Around the world democratic education has been widely accepted as a special form of regular education. In democratic schools students have the right to make their own choice regarding learning and all other areas of everyday life. In particular they may determine what to do, when, with whom and how, so long as their decisions do not infringe on the liberties of others to do the same. Responsibility for oneself and as well for each other, well being quotient, is another pilar. Ethics, emotional intelligence and the interconnection of students, parents and teachers as well is a founding principle. Students have an equal share in the decision making as to how their organization. School attendance in our school not necessarily leads to a final exam or to any exam or test. It is the students and parents choice.
Ideological embedding
Rise and Shine Democratic is an International Secondary school, in which we use holacracy, deep democracy, democracy for the intelligent (to the advice of Socrates). Holacracy is a way of organization that flows away from a pyramid power driven organization to a horizontal organization where each and everyone has independence to develop their tasks according to their own insights and cooperate with each other and share. It is a set of tools. Deep democracy is a method to value and include the opinion and views of the minority, to avoid sabotage and to maximize potential. As the latter two techniques were designed for companies they can be applied in schools as well, (almost replacing sociocracy). The practice of non-violent communication (Rosenberg) and the inspiration giving by the Japanese teacher Toshiro Kanamori (Children full of Life -documentary) are applied to help us grow consciousness about ourselves and the world. We make an attempt to embrace new economic models based on abundance, community and sharing instead of on exchange which is based on the principles of scarcity, separation and never ending competition (such as explained by Charles Eisenstein and many others). Our school as well embraces gender awareness, in the Northern European, classical feminist/humanistic sense. Girls are human beings first and then girls. Boys are human beings first, then boys, and not example humans. As far as violence is concerned our school will be connected to L’ Observatoire de la Violence Educative Ordinaire, in France, of Olivier Maurel. Parents of our students are recommended to read the works of Maurel.
Human Rights
In our school special attention is paid to education in human rights and civil rights. There has been a worldwide phenomenon of governments striving for the realization and respect for human and civil rights. Within the walls of schools however these rights seem to be absent. This causes a lot of unnecessary suffering for mainly students but as well for parents. Our school is a pilot in acknowledging human and civil rights within the walls of a school. We will as well actively teach about civil and human rights.
Cooperation with the world at large
It takes a whole village to raise a child is an saying from African countries and cultures. It points to some structures which have gone lost in our own culture, because we lost our sense of community through various mechanisms, amongst which religion which promoted the nuclear family as corner stone of society and capitalist economy which isolated the individual from nature, itself and from others. To offer our students the proper chances they deserve we organize periods of work or study for them in the outside world. The school invites the outside world in the school, to form a vibrant community of entrepeneurs, craftspeople and professionals offering insight and experiences in a teenager friendly way into their bizniz and skills. This could even be paid. Think of an architect, a bakery, a famous ballet dancer, a car mechanic, a perma-culture project, adopting a student a few weeks and taking it along the skills and giving assignments and teaching some. If a students falls in love with a profession she/he could continue learning on the spot. Individually tailored and overseen by the school and parents. If students do not want to engage in outside school learning they can develop their own 3 months learning plan, which can be about almost everything. Curriculum learning also is a possibility and can be offered digitally, and is real time adaptive. We do value personal humanized learning highest though, but might not be able always to offer that as the school needs t develop and we do pay our teachers a full and decent teachers salary. We design personally attuned teaching material if asked by students. We do have a monitoring system, which is fully transparent. It is accessible for parents, students as well as for teachers any time anywhere. A portfolio is created in this way and comments from parents, students and teachers can be accessed by each at any given moment. Each 3 months, the student designs a program for her/himself. At the end/beginning of this 3 months period the learning experience is reviewed by the student and teacher and parent, and deepening or new techniques or another program can be designed. It is very important for interested students that they are able to carry responsibility, as well as a learning process and have some knowledge of discipline as deep devotion/love.
Dedication
This school is dedicated to my son and to all kids and teens who are neuro divergent by birth and who ran into the walls of school systems that are not yet prepared understanding or seeing them or reality. Their right to education and their duty to go to school had become two different things, far apart from each other. To fulfill their Childrens’ Right to fitting education and for them to Rise and Shine! Neuro divergence is the talent of the future.

Parents & Communication
Communication with parents has been severely neglected in education to date. Rise and Shine International realizes the vulnerability of parents in education and sees it as a task to empower parents. Parents’ civil and human rights often disappear in a school, even in democratic and alternative schools. At the same time they bring the persons that are most dear to their heart to a school en trust them in the care of a total stranger. The vulnerability and unnaturalness of this act often is ignored totally. As a documentary maker in the field of educational innovation in interviews with many parents worldwide, Ariella Gracia has encountered a lot of hidden suffering among parents caused by the way they were treated by schools and teachers. We want to change something in this area. Tilt parenting a platform for parents by parents with differently wired children, already is a start for parents to start with this change. De gebruikersdata zijn niet toegankelijk voor de mailserver omdat ze end to end encrypted zijn en derhalve worden ze niet gedeeld met derden. Echter, zorg altijd dat je geen privacygevoelige informatie via het contactformulier verzendt. Volgens Zwitserse wetgeving moeten toegangsverzoeken valide zijn onder internationale verdragen en worden goedgekeurd door een Zwitserse rechtbank. Aanstaande surveillancedoelen worden op de hoogte gesteld en hebben de mogelijkheid om tegen het verzoek in beroep te gaan bij de rechtbank. Ecofeminism as a form of humanism (as opposed to the more technocratic almost phallocentric modern feminism) that leans to matriarchal and matrilineal organisation of society is my main window of perception. Restore, reclaim and embodying the sacredness of life and diversity of all life forms, caring for each other as guiding principle, cooperation instead of competition and organisation in circles of support rather than in hierarchical pyramid structures. A society based on a different concept of self and on a different story of self, other and society, world, nature: a conscious society based on the interconnectedness of beings, like the root systems of trees in forest. A society where fear and lack and violence are unknown.

Just like dolphins and whales communicate via sound frequency many of us right now are physically wired for a higher frequency or Herz then is assumed average. As our educational system is not designed for a higher frequency and a matching more refined neurology and different dominant brainpaths, many young persons get stuck in educational systems of today. Some even fall out of the system. Causing emotional and mental damage, which creates learning problems itself.
In the past decades, there has been an influx of children being born on this planet, wired in new ways, on the one hand. On the other hand, society, agriculture and education and our minds have been and are being narrowed in monoculture, political correctness, and becoming increasingly devoid of consciousness. So, less diversity allowed and more diversity coming in. Along with the familiar trait of many to resist change, this creates trouble. This problems link to a lack of rights for education as a civil right and lack of recognition of difference which refers to a lack of human rights within the walls of schools and governments. It is a pity, cause in the diversity lies gold and prosperity and a glorious future of mankind.
My experience is with certain types of neurodivergent young and adult persons (who face discrimination and bullying at the workplace): highly sensitive, visual thinkers, autists, and highly gifted persons in the sense of IQ, EQ and WQ: Mental Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence and Wellbeing Intelligence . For the past 30 years neurodivergent children, adolescents, parents and educational institutions and local governments in international contexts have asked my assistance.
In my practice for children and parents, I use a non-violent and holistic approach and a wide range of therapeutic techniques refined to the purpose. To sum up: Deep Democracy, Talanoa Dialogue, Fluisterkind methode, innerlijk kind therapie, Trauma therapie, Hakomi, Sport en Spel, Muziektherapie, Vedanta, knowledge of diet- immuun system – emotions – behaviour and brain, embracing an all inclusive vision at intelligentie (IQ, EQ en WQ), awareness of societies´ toxicity. Through experience and time my own way of working has come into existence and is still changing with the world of ideas (new research, philosophers and specialist publishing new insights) and with the character of demand by persons who ask for assistance. Advice to institutions comes into being through an application of frameworks of thought such as Holacracy and Deep Democracy as a first step. My personal flavour is a focus on well-being and consciousness. Keywords like care, connection, cooperation, and nutrition (of all kinds) swirl around my guests more strongly then competition, functionality and system approaches. I love to cooperate with artists, marine biologists, therapists, musicians, parents, teachers and educational specialist colleagues.
In the process we embark on in our meetings I highly value your own authority, wisdom and sense. I aim to see, respect and understand everyone’s window of reality. Human rights of children as well as from adults are embraced as far as possible. We counter the tendency in society at large of dehumanisation, desecration of childhood, and life as such. We aim to base our work on the interrelatedness of all life.
To create an emotionally safe environment will always be my first effort. My personal experience working with children has been one since almost 30 years now. Additionally, I have been a single mother ever since of a 17 year old son, whose being and learning style did not fit in any existing educational system, yet. Beside my specialism working with children of all ages, I carry within me the deep process as a parent, single parent and female single parent of a neurodivergent son. All types of help as mentioned below, are available in Dutch, English and in Spanish (German, Portuguese and French as well possible, if necessary).
Online Group and Individual Open Circle
I organize online individual and group meetings about Visual Learning, High Sensitivity, Highly Giftedness and learning. During an open circle I can lend my ear, listen to you and share insights you were not able to see before and might help you change things for the better. Also I can find a key with you to resolve a problem. You can use an open circle session as well to receive a tutorial, advice or raw information or referral to another specialist. Core condition is that the topic should be about high sensitivity, highly giftedness and visual thinking, children from 5 to 21 & learning. Right now I facilitate only individual circles.
Public Speaker
I am a professional public speaker and worked a few years for the Dutch Company for female Experts and Specialists “Zij Spreekt” on the topic of ‘High Sensitivity, Visual Learning and Highly Giftedness and Learning’ and on the topic of ‘Intercultural Gender and New Economy’. Through my PhD research and teaching at Universities in the Netherlands and USA my first experience at stage speaking was set initially.
Democratic International Secondary Educational Project
Three years back my focus has come to be with the creation of an International Secondary Democratic School (multi-lingual), specialised in neurodivergence, based on respect for civil and human rights and with attention for Emotional Intelligence. It is embedded in the Chambers of Commerce in The Netherlands and has been registered as a pioneer project at EUDEC. The project was launched in South of Portugal, then travelled to the North of Spain, first to a renowned eco village and later shared with a group of alternative schools in the North. The goal is to share and learn together and adapt to local needs and circumstances to create a deeper tuning and local cooperation. My skill to help you has been based on personal study, learning from and with children, adolescents, specialists and many others mainly on invitation, and on a deep interest in and love for children of all ages. I have never actively pursued any career in education consciously. My educational level is PhD and I have a background in psychology, Yoga Vedanta Philosophy and psychology which I studied in monasteries with personal teachers amongst others. Wereldmuziek, improvisatie, jazz .. Warme klanken en heerlijke ritmes. Latin, Jazz, Ladino.
Op mijn achtste begon mijn liefde voor viool. Ik studeerde daarna ♥Indiaas zang en viool en improvisatie in Jazz, Pop en Wereldmuziek. Naast viool studeerde ik operazang. Ik heb gestudeerd bij docenten aan conservatoria in Nederland, in London en in Barcelona en gewerkt in Nederland en in Zuid Europa. Mijn grootste liefde is interdisciplinair werken; dans, film, theater en modewereld. Ik schrijf en arrangeer muziek, text en theaterwerk in opdracht. Ik heb eerder gecomponeerd voor modeshows van high fashion, theaterproducties, schilderijen, beeldhouwwerken, bij rites de passage: overlijden, geboorte, doop, en op aanvraag voor een speciale persoon/event.

Ik geef momenteel via video les. En in verschillende steden in Europa geef ik persoonlijk les en groepsles. Wanneer ik terug ben in Amsterdam starten ook daar de persoonlijke lessen weer. Dit doe ik via de Amsterdam School of Music. Op hun site kun je boeken en meer lezen over welke lessen in geef. Mijn grote passie is lesgeven aan kinderen en tieners/adolescenten. Ik ben gespecialiseerd in leren en hooggevoeligheid en visueel denken en hoogbegaafdheid en geef al zo n 20 jaar lessen in viool, zang, hatha yoga, voetbal, Spaans en Nederlands. Ik maak eigen lessen op jouw persoonlijke maat. Ik werk met een persoonlijk lesplan voor jou en zal met jou samen methodieken uitkiezen die jou in staat stellen het breedste en diepste te leren. Mijn lessen zijn op holistische basis. Dat betekent dat je niet alleen viool leert spelen maar dat ik je lichaamsbewustzijn en je gedachten, emoties en gevoel ook integreer in je lessen. Improvisatie is een belangrijk onderdeel in iedere les.
